A modern design yet simple and low maintenance design for a young growing family.
Our goal was to update the look of the landscape, improve access, usability, and quality of the gardens.
We added new retaining walls, steps, lawn and patios. The pavers chosen for this project were long and narrow and varied in sizes and colours of pale grey, dark grey and green. The final planting will include the lawn and Hen's & Chicks weaving in-between the staggered pavers. To contain the rear garden for the safety of young children and small dogs we designed a narrow slated horizontal Western cedar fence with various gates.
To the side of the patio, we have multiple raised metal troughs laid out in rows on a gravel surface. The containers are used by the homeowners and toddlers to plant herbs, tomatoes and salads. The planting is minimal using monotone colours. We added woodland trees and shrubs, a small perennials bed of white, grey and silver plants and a wetland garden.
To complete the garden and entertainment areas we designed low voltage lighting throughout the site include fence lighting so as to cast beautiful shadows.
The Vinca has now almost covering the slope and the Hydrangeas, geraniums and River Birch trees full and healthy.
The new retaining wall was added to reduce the slope of the hill and allowed for an easier and elegant approach to the garden via the new staircase. LED steps lights are added for safety plus more lighting under the wall caps that casts shadows along the wall.
Stepping stone pavers lead from the garage to the steps and at the top of the staircase is a double gate leading to the rear garden, lawns, and patios. The final construction will remove the stepping stone pavers and fully pave the lower terrace. We will also treat the existing driveway surface with an 'oil & chip' limestone gravel which matches the gravel garden paths.
Container garden includes raised galvanized troughs planted out with herbs, tomatoes, and salad. The surface of this area is loose gravel. Planting is simple and minimal only consisting of Annabelle Hydrangea hedge. To provide a backdrop to this area and privacy front the neighbor we designed a Western Cedar horizontal fence. Small LED lights are attached to some panels of the fence to create wonderful shadows and night.
We selected a modern style, long narrow paver for all the paths, landings, and patios. We selected 3 colors in the grey family and staggered the outside edges into the lawn. Hens & Chicks will be planted in some of the open areas.
An elegant curved pathway leading visitors from the parking to the front of the house. It is often a challenge to direct visitors to use the front door of homes so we made it very clear and inviting to encourage this day and night.
A new gravel container garden contains modern galvanized troughs that the homeowner fills with herbs and vegetables. This area is surrounded on two sides with a new fence. The families young children have hours of fun enjoying planting and caring for these edible friends.
Completed lower terrace includes two multistem large Serviceberry trees and a paved lower area. We also treated the old driveway with an 'oil & chip' finish that adds crushed limestone gravel to the driveway surface that matches the gravel paths.
The house has now had some changes to the house color and trim. We selected two tones of grey to compliment the paving. The greys were painted over the red brick, wide trim was added to the windows, and a new entrance. These changes have added a modern look to the home.
